Welcome to the new blog for the Freed Family! Our family has been living in Guatemala since
January 2008, and currently we are serving as the on site directors Fundaniños,
a home for about 60 children who have
been placed in care by the child protective services and courts of Guatemala. The home was founded by Manolo and Vilma
Bendfeldt, a Guatemalan businessman and his wife, over 20 years ago, and has
been providing homes and care for displaced and hurting children since its
formation.
Our first years in Guatemala were working with Orphan
Resources International, an organization that provides food and other donations
to agencies, such as Fundaniños, that care for displaced children. For two years our family served at Casa
Bernabé, and home of about 150 children, where Denny worked as the medical
director of the clinic on site and Barb taught the preschool program and some English
classes in the school.
Our family consists of Denny--a
Family Nurse Practitioner by background, Barb--a
early childhood education teacher, Maredith—a
second year registered nursing student at Harrisburg Area Community College in
Lancaster, PA, Abby—who lives with
the family at Fundaniños, volunteers for general secretarial and other duties
for our church, Casa de Libertad, and assists in many of the activities and responsibilities
at Fundaniños, Risa, a trained chef,
is returning to the USA to work in a summer youth program this year and
probably will work in the USA for a period of time, and Omar, who is keeping busy
with his school studies and practicing with one of the local soccer teams.
In this blog we will
publish our regular newsletters as well as other updates that may be
relevant.
Please feel free to share this
link to other people who may be interested in our work and ministry here with
the children of Fundaniños.
